How Wheat Grows: Spring to Harvest

4th Week of April

The wheat plant has grown 4-5 inches taller in just one week but the wheat head has been pushed up the stem and is growing larger.

Now, the wheat head is at a point approximately two-thirds of the height of the plant. As the plant puts more energy into producing the seeds, the wheat head also becomes larger around and longer.

The “flag leaf” is the last leaf to emerge before the plant “heads out” (when the wheat head comes out of the tip of the stalk and is visible). In the last photo, the base of the flag leaf is about 18 inches. This is the point where the wheat head will begin to appear.
